In all honesty, you have a ready and tested solution for minimal data in a very low bandwidth and low latency situation such as satellite communication on the open sea (Iridium etc.).

This is in the form of saildocs.com as the GFS data content provider (free) using a satellite optimized mail service such as mailsail.com or xgate (not free). All you need to do is set background processes to disabled and/or set your firewall to pass only emails (pop and smtp). Sending the requests and pulling the responses can be scripted if desired.

Hey guys, I really appreciate you have continued doing this as ZyGrib got discontinued.
Anyway, I've build my own download grib download api service but I am missing some logic how to get Precipitation and Cloud Cover.
Let's say I would go to nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/filter_gfs_...ir=%2Fgfs.2019030506 and which boxes I need to tick to get that? (If I tick all and all I dan't see Precipitation and Cloud cover in XyGrib).
Also if there is some documentation online that explains that that would be awesome to read as I could not find it.
Thanks.

Hi,
ZyGrib is still running, but no update have been done since 2016. XyGrib has some new functions that many of us wanted to have.
To have all the signification of variables used by NOAA is their grib files, you'll find them on their websites (I know it is not very easy to find things on their websites)
In the example you gave, CRAIN is the cumulative precipitation, and it possible that this name is not yet recognised by XyGrib.
Grib2 is a format, but their is no complete standardisatioin of the content (including names of variables).
Bonne journée ou bonne soirée (vous pouvez choisir)
Have a nice day or good night (you can choose)
Guten Morgen oder gute Nacht (Sie können wählen)

Hi,
To get precipitation you need to select the variable APCP and also the level box for "surface"
To get cloud cover you need to select the variable TCDC and the level box for "entire atmosphere" (not entire atmosphere as a single layer)
Also note that these two variables are accumulative so they do not appear at all in the first time step of a forecast. There is no point in looking for them in the analysis file.
Hope this helped,
David

And here it works! :) Most likely I missed it because I was looking at first time step of a forecast.
Thank you!
